Thank God for Google, Tweezers and Baby Oil.

Yall after dinner, my husband let me know that our yard guy found a baby squirrel in our yard yesterday.  My husband told me tonight - and I was just terrified that I would have found him too late.  Turns out that our next door neighbor is a veterinarian who works from time to time at the local zoo.  I went over to to the Vet's house instantly, interrupted their dinner (eek!).

The Vet let me know to pick up the animal, give him a little milk and take care of it and he would pick it up in the morning on his way to the zoo.  There is a department there that takes care of just this type of thing.

So I scooped him up in a little box and brought him in.  He was writhing on the ground like he was in so much pain.  There was stuff all over him and he just looked so terrible.  Barry (the hubs) googled 'saw dust looking stuff' and we discovered that this poor baby was covered by insect eggs.  I tried to get them off with no luck..using a qtip.  Then I googled again and found out that tweezers and baby oil do the trick.  And what do you know - I had both and THEY WORKED!  And just like human babies, you have to get behind the ears, in the creases under the arms and neck and everything.  Reminded me of trying to bathe a baby... I haven't done that in a LONG time!  Anyway, once we picked him up he began to cry which made me happy - at least he had some fight left in him.  Then I gave him some milk in a dropper, washed him off and he is sleeping in a shipping box with some paper towels under him & under the box a heating blanket on low with some towels.  He is a pinky..which means he has no hair.  He is about the size of my thumb and pinky finger..and probably smaller.
So we have named him Simon.  Simon will go to the Louisiana Purchase Zoo tomorrow.  I hope Simon makes it.  He sure was cute once I got him all cleaned up.  It also reminded me of how wonderful and remarkable our heavenly Father is.  To design all the things that little Simon needs, to fit in his body when he is just barely bigger than my thumb.  He breathes, eats, (and pooped on me!) and everyhthing... in such a small space.  It is incredible.

So here is to little Simon, Google, Baby Oil, Tweezers and a remarkable Heavenly Father.

Almost all cleaned up.  The worst part was too sad and I didn't even think to take a picture because I wanted him better fast as possible, but he was in terrible shape.  I hope he makes it thru the night so he can see the vet tomorrow.

Simon all cleaned up and resting.  After a wash up of baby oil, a rinse off and pat dry. He has had teeny bit of milk.  Since he has no way to regulate his temp, he is on some paper towels, which is on top of a thick towel, with a heating blanket on low.  This will keep him warm thru the night until the vet takes him to zoo tomorrow.
